Having first appeared in the late 15th century, Scotch whiskey was initially produced exclusively from malted barley. In the 18th century, however, Scottish distilleries began producing whiskey made from wheat and rye. Today, Scotland is home to more than 130 active whiskey distilleries, which export their products to countries worldwide.
